Project Description

Sizes: 134x210cm Material: charcoal, oilpaint and pastel

This drawing series is inspired by a ceremony of the Arang Asli’s, the oldest inhabitants of the Taman Negara jungle in Malaysia. The inhabitants of this jungle have their own natural religion in which every object has a soul. This tribe mainly lives from birds and monkeys that live in the trees. When one of the family members dies, he or she is wrapped in rags and placed in the top of a tree to return their bodies to where they get their food from. The circular approach to this ceremony touched me, and led to a series of drawings where the human body has become part of its natural environment.
